Statement of Purpose

Application for Master of Science in Civil Engineering (Construction Engineering and Management – Online) Purdue University

Engineering, for me, began not in a classroom but in a small village in southern Iraq near the ancient city of Ur. My father worked for a government construction company and deeply admired the engineers with whom he collaborated. He saw in them discipline, knowledge, and the ability to build the future. From an early age, he expressed his hope that I would one day become an engineer. Although I did not fully grasp the meaning of that dream as a child, it quietly shaped my identity and aspirations.

Following the advice of one of his engineer colleagues, my father nurtured my curiosity through drawing, reading, and creative thinking. He invested part of his modest income in books, sketchpads, and building toys that allowed me to explore shapes and structures. Those early experiences developed not only imagination, but also spatial reasoning and analytical thinking—skills that would later become foundational in my engineering education.

At the age of eleven, my father passed away unexpectedly. As the eldest sibling, I assumed family responsibilities while continuing my academic journey. This period instilled in me resilience, discipline, and a deep sense of accountability. After graduating from high school with high distinction, I chose to pursue civil engineering at the University of Kufa, honoring my father’s wish. However, the 2003 war in Iraq forced me to suspend my studies due to security conditions.

During that time, I worked with the U.S. Embassy’s reconstruction team as a provincial coordinator, gaining firsthand exposure to infrastructure development, public works coordination, and large-scale project management under complex conditions. Despite the interruption in my studies, my commitment to engineering remained strong.

After relocating to the United States through a humanitarian resettlement program, I resumed my education at Tennessee State University, where I earned my Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. My academic performance reflected my determination to rebuild what conflict had interrupted. I later began graduate coursework in Environmental Engineering, completing 21 credit hours with a 3.75 GPA before pausing my studies due to financial obligations.

I then returned to Iraq and spent more than ten years working with international oil and gas companies, including Samsung Engineering and KBR, in civil construction and quality control roles. My experience included structural concrete works, steel erection, foundation systems, earthworks, and large-scale industrial infrastructure. Over time, I specialized in Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC), focusing on documentation systems, inspection protocols, compliance verification, and process optimization.

In the last seven years of my professional career, I concentrated specifically on construction quality systems, execution control, and performance monitoring. I developed a strong interest in construction planning, cost control, risk mitigation, and systems integration—areas that extend beyond field inspection into strategic construction management. My recent work in Indiana further strengthened my exposure to U.S. construction standards, coordination workflows, and project delivery systems.

Now, as I prepare for the PE Civil: Construction examination, I recognize the need to deepen my expertise through advanced graduate education. The Master of Science in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Construction Engineering and Management at Purdue University represents the ideal next step in my professional development.

Purdue’s reputation for academic rigor, applied research, and leadership in engineering education strongly aligns with my goals. The online format provides the flexibility to continue professional engagement while advancing my technical knowledge. I am particularly interested in courses related to advanced project controls, construction productivity analysis, cost engineering, risk management, and integrated delivery systems. These areas directly complement my QA/QC background and will enable me to transition into senior-level construction management and project leadership roles.

My long-term objective is to serve in leadership positions within large-scale infrastructure and energy projects, where I can integrate technical engineering knowledge with systematic construction management practices. I am especially motivated to contribute to improving construction quality systems and sustainable project delivery in both developed and developing environments.

Beyond professional advancement, my journey has instilled in me values of perseverance, responsibility, and service. I have mentored junior engineers throughout my career and remain committed to continuous learning and knowledge sharing. I believe that Purdue’s diverse and globally connected academic community will allow me to both contribute practical international field experience and benefit from collaboration with peers and faculty.

From a small village near Ur to professional practice across continents, my path has been defined by resilience and purpose. Enrolling in Purdue University’s Master of Science in Civil Engineering program is not only a continuation of my academic journey, it is the fulfillment of a lifelong commitment to building responsibly, leading ethically, and advancing the profession of construction engineering.

Sincerely,
