Project Proposal

Grid o’ Scotland is a brand-new networking and technical support company covering the whole of Scotland. They support small to medium businesses and assist with creating IT business solutions in addition to technical support. They have purchased offices in Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Aberdeen. Overall, Grid o’ Scotland will have 210 staff with 105 of them based at the head office in Glasgow, 55 staff based in Edinburgh and 25 staff based in Aberdeen. These members of staff are all office based however; provision must be put in place for working from home if needed. The rest are road-based technicians who cover the whole of Scotland and can use all three offices.

The Glasgow office is spread over two floors with HR (5 staff), Payroll (2 staff) and Senior Management (4 staff) on the second. All the technical support takes place on the first floor, and this includes sections for 60 first line support staff, 20 second line support staff and 14 third line support staff and they need space for the road-based technicians.

Both satellite offices are on one floor. The Edinburgh office has HR (2 staff), Payroll (1 staff) and Senior Management (2 staff). There are 30 first line staff and 20 second line but no third line support and they again need to have space for the road-based technicians. The Aberdeen office has 1 Senior Management, and the rest are comprised of first line support. They again need to have space for the road-based technicians.

The company expects to grow by at least 25% over the next three years.

Grid o’ Scotland wish to employ you as a consultant to outline the best network solution for them. They are expecting a brand-new network and equipment to be installed. As a consultant your task is to consider the requirements of the business and design a network which will meet the business needs of the company for many years to come. All the recommendations must meet the requirements of all national legislation, especially the GDPR and Computer Misuse Act. They have asked that this is completed with the budget of £300 000 maximum but hope it will come in under budget. This will include all computer peripherals and network equipment. They are also expecting this process to take 8 weeks from start to finish (about 2 months). This does not include the evaluation of the project. They are happy to make available up to 5 staff members to do basic installations and movement of equipment if needed.

General Instructions

The company is expecting a report which will consist, at a minimum, of the following requirements:

The project must consist of three phases:

  • Planning Phase worth 40% of the marks
  • Development/Implementation Phase worth 40% of the marks
  • Evaluation Phase worth 20% of the marks.

You need to pass each phase with a minimum of 50% to pass the overall project.

Include:

  • Contents Page
  • Executive Summary
  • Appendices/ Gantt Chart
  • Bibliography/Referencing
  • Quotes

Submission Dates

The client has requested that the agreed deadlines be STRICTLY adhered to. For every hour, the submission is over the deadline, this will attract a penalty of 10% of the section score up to a maximum of 50%. Report must be uploaded to the relevant Turnitin uploads on the VLE. The similarity cannot be over 25%. Each section must be submitted individually but be written as one report. Only once all three phases are submitted and marked will you get a provisional grade. The only feedback you will be given after a phase submission is on track to pass or needs remediation.

Planning Phase

Scope

  • Problem Analysis – What the issue is including further details given in client interview(s).
  • Project Aim – What the deliverables are.
  • Project Name – What the project will be called.
  • Budget – What it is and what you are spending the money on.

Project Analysis

  • Identify Resources – Functional and non-functional and any constraints.
  • Site Survey – Discussed in client interview but should at least have floor plans.
  • Tiered Design – Why you have used a tiered design with links to external referencing.
  • Design – Why have you designed the network in that way including hardware/software and user. Should also have physical and logical topologies.
  • Addressing Scheme – What it is, how it works. Static IP addresses and DHCP pools shown.
  • ISP – Who it is and why.
  • Policies/QoS –  Scope of policies and QoS that need to be created.
  • Security – Both physical and network

For the Development Phase you should include:

This should be written so that anyone in the company can use the document to reconfigure a device if needed. End devices should also be configured to show proof of concept (there is no need to show all the end devices attached to a network node) for the various policies and procedures implemented.

and

2) A fully working Packet Tracer file produced in version 8.2.2.0400.  No other version will be accepted, and both need to be submitted at the same time. It is your responsibility to ensure that the PT file can be opened and fully aligns with the network documentation.

The marks for this section will be awarded thus 75% of the overall mark for the written section (30 out of 40 marks) and 25% (10 out of 40 marks) for the working Packet Tracer submission. Both sections must score at least 50% for the Development Phase to be successfully passed.
