Maintaining a safe environment

Bartek is an 75-year-old male who lives alone since the death of his wife Aniela, 2 years ago.

Bartek lives in a ground floor, one bedroomed, centrally heated flat.

Generally fit and well, Barteks mobility and ability to self-care has been compromised since his fall from a ladder. He was cleaning the inside of his windows.

He has a plaster cast on his leg, so Bartek is using a crutch and sometimes a wheelchair to stand and move around.

Barteks flat is on the ground floor, but there is a step from outside to the front door.

Baseline Observations : BP = 125/85 : Pulse rate = 79 : Respiratory Rate = 19 : Temperature = 37.1® : SpO2 = 96%

Bartek is Polish and that is his first language. He does speak English.

Barteks hearing is good and he does not wear glasses.

Interactive & converses- Bartek enjoys conversation and company and has a good sense of humour

Bartek is able to use a mobile phone and laptop computer.

Bartek does not have any shortness of breath

Bartek says he only cooks when he has to. Chinese is his favourite takeaway. It’s hard for him to use kitchen facilities due to lack of space and dexterity problems caused by his injuries.

He doesn’t always have breakfast. Bartek snacks during the day, usually with a main meal in the evening.

Bartek states that he drinks about 2 litres of water a day, including coffee.

He enjoys going to the pub with his friends for social drinks. He says he has 2 – 3 pints of lager in an evening – when he can get to the pub. Bartek does not drink on his own indoors.

He is finding it difficult to mobilise to toilet independently because of his injuries.

Having to wear different clothes ( tracksuit bottoms ) to make toileting easier.

Washing and dressing

 

Bartek used to do this independently but is finding this difficult due to his injuries. He has a stool in his bathroom to sit on when he washes. He has an over-the bath shower, which he cannot use at the moment.

His son has offered to help, but Bartek often refuses as he is embarrassed.

Bartek has had to wear different clothes so he can dress independently.

Bartek lives alone. His son and other visitors help him to mobilise when they visit.

His injuries make leaving and entering his home difficult without help of at least one other person. His son and daughter-in-law live nearby, but he does not like to bother them too often.

Playing

 

Bartek misses his work and the sense of family that came with being in the services.

He enjoys going out with his friends, but this has become quite difficult. His friends make fun of his incapacity – calling him a “slow coach” and sometimes tease him by pretending to leave him at his front door unable to climb the step to get inside.

Barteks son came round to help him a lot to begin with, but he got quite cross with him and now he only comes when asked to.

Expressing sexuality Bartek says he feels scruffy because of having to wear alternative clothing.

He thinks people just feel sorry for him at the moment and won’t like or have time for someone in a wheelchair.

Sleeping

 

Bartek has an interrupted sleep pattern caused by pain and discomfort from his injuries. He has to sleep in different positions which causes him to have backache. Bartek finds it difficult to change position in bed. A
Death and dying

 

 

Bartek is Catholic. He does not attend church regularly although his friends encourage him to do so more often.

He says he does not have any concerns about dying although he admits to being quite scared for a while before having his operation as he had not been ill enough to need hospital care before.
