ENR 098 Online :5-paragraph Essay Model

I. Introductory Paragraph (three required elements)
a. Motivator Statements – also known as attention-getters or hooks, 2-3 sentences that provide an interesting, creative way to approach or introduce your thesis statement (Because a reader’s engagement with your essay is either gained or lost right away, you must begin your introductory paragraph with a series of motivator statements.)
b. Thesis Statement – the main idea of the entire 5-paragraph essay
c. Blueprint – a preview of the topics you will cover in your central/body paragraph, topics that illustrate your thesis statement
II. 1st Central/Body Paragraph
a. begins with a strong topic sentence that reveals the main idea of this particular paragraph (topic sentence=the main idea of a single paragraph)
b. rounded out with explanation/analysis and enough additional support in the form of quick examples, narrative examples, statements by authority figures (plus credentials), statistics (plus source) or a combination of these strategies so that the reader is convinced of the credibility of your topic sentence claim ( 2-3 illustrations)
III. 2nd Central/Body Paragraph

V. Concluding Paragraph (two required & two optional elements)
a. Clincher Statements – function like Motivators do, in that they begin to end the essay with creativity and polish
b. Restated Thesis – a reiteration of your thesis statement, but in different words than you used in the Intro paragraph
c. (Optional) Restated Blueprint – a reiteration of the main ideas in each central/body paragraph, but in different words than you used in the Intro paragraph
d. (Optional) Final personal reflections on a significant aspect of the essay
***A typical paragraph is usually 5-7 sentences long, which does not mean that you cannot have an effective paragraph that is either longer or shorter, but this is a range you can use to help ensure that your main idea in a particular paragraph is well-supported.
