Writing Prompt
Select one of the texts assigned for the week. Write about the text using the reader-response lens, formalist lens, or eco-critical lens. The introduction should have an attention grabber, introduction to the text, and a thesis statement. Write one organized and developed body paragraph; provide textual evidence (quotes from the story). Explain the evidence. End with a short conclusion. Here is a sample individual response (using the reader-response approach). This sample proposes how to turn the story into a short film.
In addition, here are some questions to consider:
“Sweatshop Romance”
Cahan later expressed doubt about the romantic, happy ending of “A sweatshop romance” –in his memoirs he wondered, “How on earth did it pop into my head?” Do you think the story’s romantic resolution troubles its status as a piece of realist writing? Or why would he place a romance in a sweatshop? Provide evidence from the story.
Did Beile make the right choice? Why? Why not? Provide evidence from the story.
What important idea or theme does this literary work convey? 2. What do characters do that helps to illustrate this idea?
“Mrs. Spring Fragrance”
Why does the husband wait to give his wife the jade pendant? Provide evidence from the story.

How do one or more of the characters adjust to living in a new environment while maintaining traditional values and beliefs? Provide evidence from the story.
Do you think the story’s romantic resolution troubles its status as a piece of realist writing? Provide evidence from the story.
“Early Autumn”
What important idea or theme does this literary work convey? Provide evidence from the story.
How does nature play a role in this story?
“Winter Dreams”
What does this story suggest about the American dream (during the time it was written and conceived)? How does nature play a role in this story?
Additional Question
How might you turn the story into a film adaptation? Your thesis statement should state how you’d make one or two changes to the plot for a film adaptation. Provide textual evidence from the story.
