SOWK925 Spring Guideline for completing Assessment 2
Assessment 2 Collaborative Research Proposal
Description A brief research proposal that incorporates all of the elements of collaborative research design. This should be written in the format of a report, complete with headings for included sections.
Format / Length / Duration Report format, 2000 words excluding reference list
Assessment Criteria 1. The research proposal includes: identification of a research problem and research question, a brief literature review, identification of stakeholders, outline of methodology, timeline for the research and expected outcomes
2. Harvard or APA referencing is used throughout the report
3. The report must use professional language (including grammar, spelling, punctuation and respectful language)
Subject Learning Outcomes Assessed • SLO 1- Consolidate and synthesise knowledge about the ways in which qualitative and quantitative research methods and evaluation design are used in social research.
• SLO 2- Design a social work research project using a collaborative or community research process in a rigorous and ethical manner.
• SLO 5- Produce a professional report ensuring the issue, methodology, ethical considerations and findings are justified following research conventions.
Method of Submission This is to be submitted on the SOWK925 Moodle Site.
This assessment task has been set up to be checked by Turnitin, a tool for checking if it has unreferenced content. You can submit your assessment task to Turnitin prior to the due date and Turnitin will give you an originality report. You can then make any changes that may be required and re-submit you final version by the due date.
SOWK925 Spring Guideline for completing Assessment 2
The Collaborative Research Proposal should be written in report form, maximum 2000 words including reference list. The Proposal should include the following sections:
1. Define your research problem, including a literature review
Briefly describe your research problem and support your question by describing what is currently known about the problem, including a literature review. Some questions that might guide you in defining your research problem (which come from the literature) include:
• How did you come up with your research problem? (Can be observation in clinical practice, identified weakness in literature…)
• What are the strengths and weakness of the existing literature in the area?
• How well does the research in this area incorporate the views of the community on which the research is focused? (Can you find any research that is collaborative?)
2. Define your research question and stakeholders:
• Research Question/s
o State your research question succinctly and clearly.
• Collaborative Network
o Define your stakeholders for this project
o Describe the role that each stakeholder will play in this project
3. Methodology: Describe in detail:
o Methods (e.g. ethnography, phenomenology, narrative, case study, quantitative study) — Must provide justification for methods
o Methods and instruments you will use for this research
o Inclusion/exclusion criteria
o Recruitment strategy
o Data collection tools
• How will you collect data (e.g. focus groups, interviews, body mapping, etc.)
• Instruments to be used (consider validation, reliability of tools)
• How will you analyse the data?
• Justify your course of action.
– Comment on the democratic process needed to conduct this collaborative piece of research.
o Who are the participants, audience/s and voices articulated in the action process?
o How have you ensured that your project embodies the values of collaborative research?
4. Implementation Timeline for the research
Briefly describe the time period for this research from inception through to dissemination of results. Provide a time line for the research –e.g. one month, two months, two years– and what activities for the researchers are involved chronologically in this research. This could be presented as a Gantt chart or in a table and should include the following information:
1) What activities will be involved in your research? Be specific about activities involved (e.g. consultation with community, research design, data collection).
2) When will each activity commence (e.g. in month 1 of a 2 year plan)?
3) How long will each activity take (eg 1 month)?
NOTE—This chart should not be included in word count!
SOWK925 Assessment 2 Rubric
30% of final grade. Marked out of 100.
Unsatisfactory Satisfactory Meets or exceeds expectations
The research proposal includes: identification of a research problem and research question, and identification of stakeholders (10%) Research problem poorly defined or not supported by research. Research question does not conceptually match research problem. Inadequate reference made to concepts related to collaborative research approaches. Limited identification of stakeholders or inadequate discussion of how research designed to include all stakeholders in process.
Research problem identified and some connection made between current state of research and problem. Research question logically follows from identified research problem. Some discussion of concepts related to collaborative research approaches. Most stakeholders and identified and roles are defined.
Clearly defined research problem. Stated concisely and well-supported by literature. Justification for research question clearly stated based upon identified research problem. Key stakeholders are identified and roles are clearly defined. Some discussion of how stakeholders involved in process.
To exceed expectations: Key stakeholders are all clearly identified and roles are described in detail. Discussion of potential conflicts and ways to address these conflicts is included.
A literature review is included in the proposal (20%) Literature summary limited with few (fewer than 4) or poor quality references cited. State of current literature not clear. There is some evidence or detail in lit review but some points are not supported. Some discussion of strengths and weaknesses of literature cited in relation to collaborative research concepts. At least 4-6 articles cited.
Relevant high quality references are provided in support of points and there is a clear story provided about current state of literature. Discussion of literature cited in relation to collaborative research concepts provides insight. More than 6 articles cited.
To exceed expectations: Demonstrates sophisticated analysis of themes from the literature, drawing on collaborative research concepts and concepts identified in literature.
A methodology is outlined for the research project (20%) Methodology not clearly defined and described, no argument made for choice of methodology. Participants and processes inadequately described. Limitations to research inadequately described.
Methodology identified but no adequately described. Some discussion of process needed to conduct research and description of participants. Some discussion of limitations to research.
Methodology identified adequately described. Good discussion of process needed to conduct research and thorough description of participants. Discussion of limitations to research comprehensive and linked to concepts related to collaborative research.
To exceed expectations: Discussion demonstrates sophisticated understanding of needs of population
to set up research process and limitations of research.
A timeline for the research and expected outcomes are included in the proposal (10%) No timeline or incomplete timeline. Limited to no description of activities required to accomplish research.
Basic timeline completed but lacking some detail in activities required to complete research. Comprehensive description of timeline and activities required to complete research.
Harvard or APA referencing is used throughout the report (20%) Harvard or APA referencing style is not used correctly
Harvard or APA referencing style is used correctly for some but not the majority of citations and references
Harvard style or APA referencing is used correctly for the majority of citations and references with minimal errors
To exceed expectations: Harvard or APA referencing style is used correctly for all citations and references and all points are adequately referenced as appropriate.
The assessment uses professional language (including grammar, spelling, punctuation and respectful language) (20%) The assessment does not contain professional language overall (including grammar, spelling, punctuation and respectful language). Professional language (including grammar, spelling, punctuation and respectful language) is used consistently in the assessment, with minimal exceptions.
