Assignment Details and Instructions
The professional body, the Chartered Association for Project Management (APM), describes the Project Management Office as a strategic driver for organisational excellence, which seeks to enhance the practices of execution management, organisational governance, and strategic change leadership.
The aim of this assignment is to investigate the current issues facing the inception of a Project Management Office (PMO) in a business sector (i.e. construction, engineering, ICT, R&D etc.) chosen by you. The report will critically examine the challenges of implementing a PMO in the specific business sector chosen, and will relate these challenges to one or more project management knowledge areas.
To start with, choose a business sector, for example, construction, IT, healthcare, etc.
This can be a sector of interest to you career wise.
Then, conduct a critical review of the literature, selecting studies or cases that discuss the inception of a PMO in the particular sector that you have chosen to focus on. Refer to the International Journal of Project Management and the Project Management Journal for PMO related journal articles (the two most established academic journals in the field) – but you may use other academic journals as well.
Critically examine the strengths and weaknesses of having a PMO in the chosen business sector.
Make sure you relate those strengths and weaknesses to one or more project management knowledge areas discussed in the unit. As identified by the APM, the project management knowledge areas are: quality assurance, financial management, risk management, scheduling, managing teams, procurement, integration management, scope management and communications management.
Write a conclusion with recommendations based on your informed perspective on how the PMO could overcome their weaknesses and improve on their strengths in the future.
